Bat Buying Guide

If you are like many of us and would like to get your child a new baseball bat, make sure you buy a bat that your child can legally use in Little League. The Little League bat rules have changed for 2012 to include no exceptions on illegal bats.

There are a few different types of baseball bats these days.  They include bats with aluminum handle and barrel, bats with composite handle and aluminum barrel (sometimes referred to as "half and half" or "2 piece"), and bats with both a composite handle and a composite barrel. The bat you decide on will depend on factors such as cost, color, and brand, but please make sure you are buying a bat that is approved for Little League play by using the guidelines below.

Important Note: The ONLY legal barrel size for Little League play is 2 1/4 inch.

Aluminum Handle and Aluminum Barrel

The majority of these bats are legal for Little League play provided they have been licensed by Little League.  If this is the type of bat you are thinking about purchasing, make sure the EXACT model number appears in the Little League Current Licensed Bat List before purchasing.

These bats are the most affordable ranging from $20 and up.

Composite Handle and Aluminum Barrel

The majority of these bats are also legal for Little League play provided they have been licensed by Little League. If this is the type of bat you are thinking about purchasing, make sure the EXACT model number appears in the Little League Current Licensed Bat List before purchasing.

These bats usually cost somewhere between fully aluminum and fully composite bats.

Composite Handle and Composite Barrel

There are only a few of these types of bats that are legal for Little League play, so if this is the type of bat your child desires, make sure the EXACT model number appears in the Little League Approved Composite Bats list.

Composite bats are usually much more expensive ranging from $100 - $400.
